The tree came down โ but the stump is still there, catching the mower blade, sprouting volunteer shoots, and quietly rotting into a termite condo. We grind stumps across Tuscaloosa 6โ10 inches below grade, rake the chips, and hand you back a patch of ground you can actually use.
A leftover stump isn't just an eyesore. In our climate it becomes a problem on a schedule:
Our grinder is a wheeled machine with a carbide-toothed wheel that chews the stump into chips a few inches at a time. We grind the visible stump plus the flaring root collar 6โ10 inches below finished grade โ deep enough that you can lay sod, plant a bed, or run a mower over it without ever knowing the tree was there.
Access matters: standard grinders need about 36 inches of gate clearance. For tight backyards in the older neighborhoods around the University and Capitol Park, we use a narrow-access machine that fits through a standard fence gate. For big storm stumps with surface roots running 20 feet, we chase the major roots and discuss how far you want us to go โ quoted by the inch of stump diameter, so you know exactly what you're paying for.
After grinding, we rake the chip pile. You have three options for the chips: keep them as free mulch (excellent for beds around Druid City azaleas), have us spread them on site, or haul them away. Topsoil, grade, and seeding can be quoted if you want the spot fully finished.
Customers sometimes ask for a stump to be "pulled out" instead of ground. Here's the honest trade: pulling a stump with an excavator tears up a circle of lawn 8โ15 feet wide, rips through irrigation and buried utilities, and costs several times more. Grinding leaves 90% of the benefit at a third of the disruption. The only time full excavation makes sense is when you're building over the spot (footings, pool, driveway) and every root has to go. We'll tell you if your job is one of those rare cases.
Local species behave differently under the grinder. Pine stumps grind fast โ soft, stringy wood โ but loblolly root plates can be enormous, so we quote by the full root flare. Oak and pecan stumps are dense and slow, with pecan being the toughest wood we touch. Sweetgum grinds easily but spreads aggressive surface roots we'll want to chase. None of it changes the price structure โ it's quoted by diameter and depth โ but it changes the time on site, and we'll set expectations on the estimate visit.
Most residential stumps in the Tuscaloosa area run $100โ$300 each, with volume discounts for multiple stumps on the same visit (very common after a storm cleanup or a lot-clearing job). Minimum trip charge applies for single small stumps outside our core routes. Estimates are free and can usually be quoted from photos if you text a wide shot with a tape measure or shovel handle for scale.
We'll quote it fast โ or come by for the bigger jobs. Free, no pressure.
